The Bellboy is one of the most popular sweet pepper varieties for a reason — it produces loads of perfectly shaped bell peppers over a long season, starting green and ripening to a vibrant red. Mild, sweet, and crunchy, they’re brilliant for salads, stuffing, roasting, or snacking straight from the plant. Reliable, productive, and easy to grow… what more could you want?
June to October - Pick when peppers are swollen, glossy, and firm. Leave on the plant longer to deepen the colour from green to red and boost sweetness.
• Planting: Space 45cm apart in well-drained soil in a sunny, sheltered spot.
• Where to Grow: Best in a greenhouse. Can grow in pots in a conservatory or sunny patio — but outdoor yields will be smaller.
• Watering: Peppers love moisture — keep evenly watered, especially in dry spells (avoid waterlogging).
• Shade in Heat: In very hot summers, provide light shade to protect leaves.
• Support: Once plants reach 30cm, stake them to support the weight of the fruit.
• Feeding: Begin feeding only when 2–3 peppers have formed.
• Fruit Set Trick: If only one pepper forms and stays small, pick it to encourage more to develop.
• Warm Roots = Happy Peppers: Grow in pots or growbags — they warm up quicker than cold garden soil.
• Pick for Productivity: Regular harvesting encourages more peppers to form.
• Sun = Sweetness: The more sunlight the peppers get, the sweeter and richer the flavour becomes.
