Buffalo Steak Tomatoes

If you love big, bold, show-stopping tomatoes, this is the one for you! These giants weigh an impressive 250–500g each, with deep red, slightly flattened fruits and firm, meaty flesh that’s perfect for slicing, stuffing, grilling, or layering into the ultimate tomato sandwich. Packed with old-fashioned flavour and impressive presence, this variety brings a real wow factor to your greenhouse.

Best Time to Plant

Greenhouse: April
Outdoors: 3rd week of May, once all frost danger has passed. Frost may turn the leaves blue temporarily — they usually recover unless the main stem collapses (rare).

Harvest

Around 8 weeks after planting, once the fruits are large, red, and fully swollen.

Growing Instructions

Planting: Space 45cm apart in well-drained soil, a large pot, or a growbag inside a greenhouse.
Hardening Off: No greenhouse? Start in a conservatory or bright windowsill and acclimatise outdoors over 4–6 days after frost risk passes.
Watering: Keep soil consistently moist — never allow it to dry out completely.
Training:
– Use a 6ft vertical string or cane.
– Train stems clockwise up the support.
– Pinch out all side shoots as they appear.
– When plants reach the top, loop them over and let them trail down while still removing side shoots.
Feeding: Start feeding only when 3–4 fruits begin to swell — not before.
Maintenance: Remove dead or yellowing leaves. In mid-August, pinch out the growing tip to help ripen the final fruits.

Top Tips

Avoid Problems: Irregular watering causes splitting, blossom end rot, and tough skins — keep moisture steady.
No Manure: Avoid farmyard manure; herbicide residues can severely harm tomato plants.
Bigger Fruits: Limit trusses and remove small fruits if you want truly huge beefsteaks.
Sun Lovers: Give Buffalo Steak the warmest, brightest spot for maximum flavour and size.
