A true classic and the hardiest leek you’ll ever grow! Musselburgh is an old favourite loved for its reliability, rich flavour, and cold-weather toughness. With long, tender white stems and deep green leaves, these leeks thrive through winter, giving you a fresh, tasty harvest when little else is growing. Perfect for hearty soups, stews, or pulled early as delicious baby leeks!
August to March – pull earlier for baby leeks.
• Planting: Plant in bunches, 15cm apart, in a sunny but sheltered position with well-drained soil.
• Watering: Keep well watered until established and in dry weather.
• Blanching: As they grow, carefully mound soil around the stems (without covering the leaves) to encourage longer, tender white stalks.
• Soil Health: Their strong root system helps break up heavy ground for future crops.
• Perfect Partners: Plant alongside carrots – they naturally protect each other from carrot fly and leek moth.
• Winter Winners: Musselburghs are incredibly hardy and taste even sweeter after a light frost.
• Succession Planting: For a steady supply, stagger your planting times through the summer months.
