(Perennial)

Welsh Onion (Perennial)
A reliable, flavour-packed perennial that keeps on giving. Welsh Onion forms neat clumps of non-bulbing stems with a mild, chive-like onion flavour. Hardy, easy to grow and brilliant in the kitchen, it’s ideal for salads, stir-fries and garnishes – plus it makes a great companion plant for veg beds.

Planting
• Soil Preparation:
Plant into fertile, well-drained soil or compost. Improve heavy soil with added organic matter to encourage strong root growth.
• Spacing:
Allow enough space between clumps to promote airflow and steady growth.
• Light:
Full sun is ideal, but Welsh onions will tolerate light shade.
• Containers:
Perfect for pots and raised beds, making them easy to manage and harvest close to the kitchen.

Care
• Watering: Water regularly, especially in dry spells.
• Mulching: Apply mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
• Protection: Watch out for slugs and snails, particularly on young growth.

Height & Spread
• Size: 30 – 60cm × 20 – 30cm.

Harvesting
• Cut & Come Again: Snip green stems with scissors as needed, ideally in the morning for the freshest taste.
• Regrowth: Regular harvesting encourages new shoots, but avoid cutting all stems at once to keep plants strong.

Top Tips
• Companion Planting: Grow alongside tomatoes, carrots and peppers to help deter pests.
• Continuous Crop: Leave a few stems to grow on for a steady supply throughout the season.
• Winter Hardy: Plants die back slightly in cold weather but return reliably in spring.
